Muthiah Bhagavatar’s melodious composition Raja raja radhite set to Rupakatala also does not use
the syllables Ma and Pa
Mysore Maharaja wanted Krithis in Kannada language on his family
goddesses Sri Chamundeshwari and specially inducted Harikeshanallur Muttaiah
Bhagawatar to Asthaana.
It is learnt that HMB composed this keertana ( rajaraja radhite nadanidhe sharade ) when he saw
Mysore Maharajah krishnaraaja Wodeyar was unwell and had swollen lips.
HMG sat at the chamundi Hill Temple before sanctum sanctorum and composed this Keertana asking goddesses to keep his King healthy. He did not compose on the king , but only sought her grace to make the King well.
The raga name is derived from this specialty.(Nir=without, and Oshta= lips).

Chaturdasha rAgamAlikA tALam: Adi
SrI Viswanatham Bhajeham is set in fourteen Ragas - Adi Tala. The Ragas in this Ragamalika are Sriragam, Arabhi, Gowri, Nata, Gowla, Mohanam, followed by viloma swaras (rendering of swaras in the reverse order of Ragas). The second half contains Sama, Lalita, Bhairavam, Saranga, Sankarabharanam, Kambhoji, Devakriya, Bhoopalam, followed again by viloma swaras, and finally ending in the commencing Raga, Sriragam. This composition is in praise of Lord Viswanatha, of the temple located in the village Kulikkarai, near Tiruvarur, Tamilnadu.

I came across your musical web Eswara by chance in an attempt to refine myself on Music. Its really fruitful. Best things in our Lives ie most In-valuables are available at free of cost. Your web too... My sincere heartful thanks for your kind works for it may reach & help someone even beyond our generation. I liked everything in your web. Particulalry your grand kids drawing about the zebra..Zoo. God should give you everything in life. I pray for all your family members.

I have no music background or knowledge but i have now passed half of my life with a guiltiness that i did not try to learn it. Though my schooling was in a village near neyveli, i started my 6th std in TTV school in chennai in 74. There the Asst Head Master cum PT master daily used to torture me. He used to command me onething to do, a dirty job daily which I hated. He dont know me. He never took any subject in our class. I was not also in NCC where he was the master. But still today I wonder why he chose to torcher me.

You know what he asked me to do?

To sing daily the school prayer in HM room in Mic. There were many students interested in doing the job but he picked only me. The reason he loved my voice. But i disliked the job due to my orientation (that time) towards Dravidian movement. I have recommended many of my brahmin friends to the Asst HM for the prayer duty. But he insisted only me. Though I did without any interest, God gifted me something in return. If you go now to the TTV school, you can find a big board. In that my name will be there as the best out going student for the year 1979. It was the gods gift in return for me ( though i did not ask him). But now I realise I have failed something in what God asked me for Him. I should have developed my vocal skill. Under social circumstances, I could not do it then. Its my guilt. I am always sorry about this…. Switzerland

Vkailasam: Sir Can you tell a few words about you.

Thyagaraja: Laughing-My forefathers migrated long time back-during

16th century

from Andhara and settled down in Tanjore

District. We belong to

Telugu smartha Brahmin sect. My maternal grandfather was Giriraja

kavi.I was born in his house.My grandfather was a poet in the court

of the king of Tanjavur.My father was kakarla Ramabrhmam.My mother

was Seethamma.I am the third son to my parents.My father was

patronized by the king and he was attending to spiritual activities

in the court .I am named after local deity Thagyaraja.

Vkailasam : Sir, I was wondering ….

Thyagaraja: Yes,Yes.I Know what you are going to ask Why compositions are in

telegu… is it not ..laughing….

As we are basically Telegu people,this came to me naturally.As the

flow was free,perhaps the thought that I should change,never occurred

to me….nothing else.

Vkailasam: Is Namo Namo Ragavaiah your first piece?

Thyagaraja: Yes, it is in Raga Desika Todi.

Vkailasam: Were you merely 8 years at that time?

Thyagaraja: Mu…. Mu …..

Vkailasam: About your guru sir..

Thyagaraja: I commenced training at an early age with sonti venkataramiah.

vkailasam: We learn that he was very impressed with you and invited you to perform in his house, were you to obey the Guru you Sang “Entharo Mahanubhavu”.

Thyagaraja: Yes ….Yes …

vkailasam: Sir, Who initiated you to Rama Mantra?

Thyagaraja: It was my father Ramabrahmam who bought me to worship Rama . I was chanting continuously almost non stop. I had a momentary drashan of Shri Rama. I was ecstatic.

vkailasam : Is it at that time you sang Balakanakamaya?

Thyagaraja: Absorbed in his thoughts

Vkailasam: Sir…

Thyagaraja: Yes…

vkailasam We learnt that sage Naradha has provided you the secret and

Mystery of musical notes. Is it you had the blessings of both

Lord Rama and Sage Naradha?

Thyagaraja: No reply..

vkailasam Sir, we are told that you have turned down the gifts and the request

of the King to sing in his presence as you felt anguished

and sang the song Nidi sala sugama.

Thyagaraja: Yes… Which is better—money and fame or being in the presence of the Lord Rama?

vkailasam But that resulted in the loss of His Idol?

Thyagaraja: But the ecstasy which I got on recovery of the same! After this

incidence, I visited various temples. I recall I sang the five songs

Kovur Pamcharatnas in praise of Lord Sunderewara.

vkailasam Yes sir we heard that Kovur Sunderesa mudaliar who has

hosted you hinted that he would like songs in his praise.

Thyagaraja: No reply..

vkailasam Sir, for you Bakthi and Music are same you used your compositions to

activate Nadhopasana to attain Moksha.

Thyagaraja: yes yea I have brought out these in my songs Shobillu

Swararagasudha, Nadathanumanisham and also Nadopasana.

vkailasam Yes Sir. They provide insight into worship of Swaras.

Sribapriya also provides insight of mind seeking Swaras in

Blissful forms.

Thyagaraja: I have expounded Nada yoga in MokshamuGalada and

also in Ragasudharasa.

vkailasam Yes sir…in Manusunilpa you have indicated that in spite of

all and any qualification that one may have, unless one gives up

kama and moha, there is no use in doing pooja or thapas.

Thyagaraja: Yes.. I stressed the same in Manasu swadeenamaina.

vkailasam Sir, Is it in the song Eavarani nirnayan chedira you have

explained

Rama manthira have been derived from Narayana and Siva Manthirams

taking two letters RA and MA from them respectively.

Thyagaraja: Yes Those who know this truth are worthy of respect

and one can prostrate before them.

vkailasam Sir, there are no songs to invoke blessings of Nava grahas in your

compositions. We are told both you and Purandaradasa

did not attach any importance to astrology as both of you have felt

that it is the Lord who is the force behind the forces of planets.

Thyagaraja: Laughs… my song Grahabalamemi can provide answer.

You follow Dwaitham or Adwaitham school?

Thyagaraja: You can refer to my song Dwaitha sugama..

vkailasam Sir ,Dwitha says Jeevatma is different from Paramatma.

Adwaitham says both are same.You calls upon the lord to clarify.

When you ask the Lord who is the same as Paramathma,can we

take you are considering them separate?

Madurai Mani Iyer:
Mani Iyer was a great devotee of Maha Periava who treated Mani Iyer like his own child. Mani Iyer saw Sri Periavaal as Sri Kapaaleswarar, Sri Parameswara himself .
Once Mani Iyer was singing in His presence after he had lost his eyesight . While singing he heard someone accompanying him with beautiful rhythm. After completing the song, he wanted to know from vembu Iyer as to who was accompanying him with such a beautiful rhythm. Immediately Sri Maha periava intervened and told Mani Iyer that it was he with a peel of orange in his hand like kanjira. "Naan taan appaaa taalam potadhu!", Suddenly Mani Iyer broke down with tears and cried "Appane Kapaaleeswara!, parameswaraa! "yen" Periavaala thaalam potadhu?" He cried and told "En periavaalai paaka mudiyalaye, enge irukkaa" Periyavaal in his voice filled with kaarunyam replied "ido un pakkathileye irukkenappa" Mani Iyer repeatedly told "Appane Kapaaleswaraaa! Parameswaraa!" and prostrated. Periavaal blessed him with his own benign smile like a mother to her child.( Free translation)

She was not very healthy, but her voice belied her weak physique. Although she was thin and frail, her voice combined melody with tensile strength. I have heard her sing without a mike.

NC was perfect in whatever she sang — intonation, sruti suddham, emotion and clarity of words. The purity of notes in her rendering and her adherence to sruti were remarkable. Her voice could traverse the middle and higher octaves with effortless ease. Her voice rang with vibrancy, a reenkaara, as she crossed the tara shadja and dwelt on the rishabha.

It is my impression that M.S. Subbulakshmi took NC’s music as a model. In the Simhendramadhyama kriti Unnai allaal verey gati NC sang a number of sanchara-s above the panchama and in the tara sthayi. Listeners were astounded by her rendition of this Kotiswara Iyer composition. She would often take up niraval on the phrase “Kai mel palan arul deivamey”. The song was a great hit. Thanks to NC, this song gained in popularity and other musicians also started including it in their recitals. NC carried the music lovers along with her on the strength of her simple music and fine voice.

Like MS, she too was guided by a Sadasivan. In this case Sachi, as he was better known, supported and assisted her but he was not a patch on the famous Sadasivam. I knew C.K. Sachi because he directed ‘Radha Kalyanam’ the second film in which I acted, for which the music was by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar. Sachi took NC under his wing but she did not live long and succumbed to tuberculosis.
We must be thankful that she has left behind many recordings through which her music lives on.

GEETHA RAJA has established herself as a well known concert vocalist in South Indian classical music for two decades. She is an accomplished musician with Master's degrees in Music and English.

Far away from the streams of formal and professional Carnatic music, like lilies in the pond, two siblings, Sreeusha and Sireesha developed and unearthed their skills on the mandolin. Thanks to their foresighted parents, these two sisters were encouraged and honed their talents on the mandolin. Today they are competent performers on the stage winning praise from one and all.
At present Sreeusha and Sireesha are under the care of Kalaimamani Ms. A. Kanyakumari, a renowned violinist. Ms.Kanyakumari has taken these two sisters under her wings, spending all her spare hours in guiding Sireesha and Sreeusha fine tuning their skills on the mandolin to the demanding strength of Carnatic music.

If one does performs so, is it necessary for him to get concerned about the effects of the movements of planets on him ?

This is what Thyagaraja says.

Gist
What strength the planets have? Only the the grace of Lord Sri Rama has the real strength.
For those who meditate on the beautiful form of the Lord, the strength of the nine planets can prove to have no effect.
To this Tyagaraja as also to those eminent persons who always chant the names of Lord Hari , the afflictions caused by the planets can have no effect as the five great sins and the obstinate (six-fold) enemies - desire etc. (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya) will be removed by the chanting.

and Naal en seyum Koll en seyum-Tirupugaz brings out the same that if one has the

Grace of The Lord, one need not fear for the effects of planetary movements.

Saint Purandara Dasar also brings out the above in his composition:

Meaning : O Lord with eyes resembling lotus, you are the one who has powers over all Grahas (planets), which alone protects the entire universe. (which means that it is meaningless to pray shani/rahu/ketu etc without praying shri Hari).

Meaning :

You are sun, moon, venus, or comets, saturn, or any other planet. You are day or night, you are the nine vidhanas (6 vedangas, mimamsa, nyaya, vyakarana), you are the physician who can cure 'bhava' disease (which makes us take birth in this world).

Meaning :

You are the pakshamasa (the month which is suitable to give tarpana to our forfothers), you are the parva kala (eclipse), you are good times or inauspicious times, you, the one who protected draupadi by giving infinite saree, are the one who has garuda as your vehicle and protects everyone.

Rutu vatsaravu nine pruthivigadiyu nine
kratu homa yagna sadgatiyu nine
jitavagiyennodeya purandara vitalane
shrutige silukada apratima mahima nine |3|

Meaning :

You are rutu vatsara, ugadi (year begining), all kinds of homas, and yagnas, you are the one to be reached (moksha), O my Lord, purandara vitala, you are the one who is beyond even the vedas (the one who cannot be known just by vedas either).
Muthuswamy Dikshadar seems to have a different view as he had composed songs on Navagrahas.

How the planets go round the set path without deviating .Which is the force behind keeping them in their designated path ?
All the above Saints who had the glimpse of the Lord, seems to agree that if one follows the path set out by Gita and surrenders all actions to Hari and also performs their duty without wishing for their fruits, they need not be concerned about the effects of the movements of planets; as, the Lord is the controlling force behind the grahas.

'Prince among musicians and a Musician among Princes'

Music career ( WikiPedia)

Rama Varma gave his maiden public performance in 1990 on the insistence of Prof T. V. Gopalakrishnan.

He has given vocal and Veena concerts all over India and in Europe, Middle East and the USA . He has performed at various venues in Europe, including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, the Tropentheater, and the Korzo Theater, Netherlands. For many years he had associated with the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music offering vocal classes in Indian Classical Music and also voice training sessions.

He frequently gives lecture demonstrations in South Indian Classical Music particularly on Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna's compositions. Varma is regarded as an expert authority in the compositions by both Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma and Dr. M. Balamuralikrisha. He has a repertoire of Swathi compositions which is unmatched by anyone else.

He was invited to perform at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan by the then President of India, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam. Dr. Abdul Kalam became a fan of Varma after listening to his CD, ‘Thaanam - The Pulse Of The Veena.’

He regularly contributes articles on Indian Music to news papers like The Hindu and others.

The Manipuri 'Raas Leela' is essentially lyrical. The leela is preceded by 'Nat Sankirtana' and an invocation of Lord Chaitanya. As per folk lore, the Manipuri King Bhagyachandra once saw the raas-leela in one of his visions, and named it the 'Maha-Raas'. His daughter princess Vimbavati popularly known as Shija Lairoibi played the role of Radha in the first ever Raas Leela organized. The principal singers are dancers who act as 'sakhis' and are supported in the singing by two 'sutradhaars'. The rasdhari usually play the manipuri drums or "pung", and shlokhas from the Bhagwad Gita are recited during the performance. This is one such performance by artists of the 'Manipur Jagoi Marup' in 2006

lakshya value which Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer is said to have completed in one
week's time."-The Hindu, Friday, Dec 30, 2005.

These compositions are in praise of Lord Pranatharthi Hara and His Consort Dharmasamvardhini.
