Music and Astrology

 MY POSTINGS AT RASIKAS.ORG...

 Music and Astrology :

Astrological considerations- indications necessary for a musician
The speech (voice) is governed by the second house (from Lagna) in a horoscope.
Mercury is considered the planet (Karaka)
which has control over speech ( Voice).
So, if the second house,
The lord ( ruler) of the second house,
And the karaka-Mercury
Are strong,
We can say that the native viz., the owner of the horoscope is sure to have a sweet voice which itself can be called half Music!
If these are weak and afflicted, he will be having a coarse voice and missing the musical touch.

Venus is also considered as the planet of artistic pursuits including music. Moon is stated to stand for mind and human emotions.
The interest in artistic pursuits is provided by Venus on Mercury and Moon.

If these planets-Mercury Moon and Venus join together it would be better.
For a successful vocalist the blessings of Venus are a pre-requisite.
Mars is a planet which provides courage and fearlessness on stage.
Mars is also the karaka of the third house which among other things provides clue to the musical knowledge of the individual. As such he is also one of the planet along with the above three planets to be watched for vocalist.

The tenth house represents the career and its ruler and the karaka of the tenth house Viz., Sun and Saturn will determine whether the artist would pursue his talents in music as a profession.

For success in any field Sun plays an important role
As also the fifth and ninth houses for invoking divine blessings.
There has to be relationship between the above planets and houses for a successful career in music..
If one is able to study the position of planets in their horoscope,
And also their relationship vis a vis they occupy, he can possibly determine the career relating to music…

Astrology and Music:
(Courtesy-http://www.astrouniverse.com/music.php
This site is not available now..)...

Some of the features are detailed below…

Both Astrology and music are devotional

Music has sounds and rhythms based on mathematical calculations and are as old as the Vedas as is the case with Astrology which is a contemporary science. ( The distance between any two notes is called an interval which has a mathematical base.)

Music is essentially made up of twelve tones. These 12 tones are called the chromatic scale.

In Astrology there are twelve zodiac signs as is the case with twelve swaras.

It is stated that the swaras are identified with Zodic signs :
There is reference to the above at...
also...
http://www.carnatica.net/dimensions/astrology.htm

Kanya Rasi (Virgo) - Suddha Rishabha
Tula (Libra) - Chatusruti Rishabha
Vrischika (Scorpio) - Sadharana Gandhara
Dhanus (Sagittarius) - Antara Gandhara
Mithuna (Gemini) - Kakali Nishada

Vrishaba (Taurus) - Kaisika Nishada
Mesha (Aries) - Chatusruti Daivata
Meena (Pisces) - Suddha Daivata
Makara (Capricorn) - Suddha
Kumbha (Aquarius) - Suddha

The two swaras Shadja and Panchama are important in music and these are identified with the Sun and Moon representing the signs Leo and cancer.

As sun and moon are identified with Shadja and Panchama,
there is identification between other planets and swaras also.

Both astrology and music have curing effects in medical parlance.
A weak plant causing physical or mental hardship can be rid off by strengthening the planet with relevant Chanting of mantras or slogas.
Similarly there are ragas which are stated to give relief for the ailments.

Just as Sapta talas of Carnatic music , we have sevan planets ( Ragu and kethu are considered as Chaya Grahas) in Astrology.

One goodness about this astrology, though one may not understand most of it is that someone else can be blamed for all our misery ...

"Should Capricorn and Aquarius be associated with shudha madhyama and prati madhyama?"

Saturn is the ruler of these two houses..

Is possibly due to the dual nature of Saturn......

"a). as a "disciplined effort; acceptance of duties and responsibility, patience, organization, reliability."

or b). as "self-restriction through too much reliance on self and lack of faith; rigidity; coldness; defensiveness; crippling inhibition; fearfulness and negativity"

Astrology can provide assistance in shaping one’s career. This is what learned people have stressed again and again.
You have take it only as a guidance...perhaps desist from depending on predictions.

Recently, I came across an article quoted by my daughter in FB..." The Ant Philosophy"..
Quote:
The Ant Philosophy

I think everybody should study ants. They have an amazing four-part philosophy.

Here is the first part: Ants never quit. That’s a good philosophy. If they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them, they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over. They’ll climb under. They’ll climb around. They
keep looking for another way. What a neat philosophy—to never quit looking for a way to get where you’re supposed to go.

Second, ants think winter all summer. That’s an important perspective. You can’t be so naive as to think summer will last forever. So ants gather their winter food in the middle of summer.

An ancient story says, “Don’t build your house on the sand in the summer.” Why do we need that advice? Because it is important to think ahead. In the summer, you’ve got to think storm. You’ve got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun.

The third part of the Ant Philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.” And the first warm day, the ants are out. If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day. They can’t wait to get out.

And here’s the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the “all-you-possibly-can” philosophy.

Moral: Never give up, look ahead, stay positive and do all you can....

In the Anupallavi of the song 'Bantureethi Kolu', Thyagaraja seeks a guard's post...

Sri Thyagaraja Swamy says that, the guard’s post should be such that he is empowered to destroy all the demons which are Arishadvargas (Arishad Vargas are the six passion of mind, they are Kama - lust, craze, desire; Krodha - anger, hatred; Lobha - greed, miserliness, narrow minded; Moha - delusory emotional attachment; Mada or Ahankara - pride, stubborn mindedness; and Matsarya - envy, jealousy, show or vanity, and pride) and since the guard is empowered to do so, he needs such a guard's post...

Scorpio rASI:

The FOLLOWING are the traits commonly endowed with people born with Scorpio rasi or lagna or rasisis which are considered friendly to it especially when they are occupied or are associated by evil planets..which are either natural malefics or by being owners of evil houses..6, 8 and 12…

"There are of Cruel minded, ever busy, financially highly ambitious, firm, heroic, thinks ill of others, angry with malice, quarrelsome,
Treacherous including to friends, intelligent, unsatisfied, powerful, proud and laborious.
Usually they are enriched with wealth & human resources, bestowed with fortunate spouse service inclination , inhibitory for others activities, commits secret sin, backed by friends and servants, involved in extramarital
censored word including marrying a second wife ,angry with parents and having parasitic attitude."

“Envy or malicious nature demonstrates a 'negative emotion' as a result of discontent and ill-will over another's advantages. It is a feeling of grudging admiration and desire to have something possessed by another. Envy is when you do not measure up to someone else or you very much want something someone else has….

Envy demonstrates spite and resentment at seeing the success of another..

Envy focuses on what others have which they do not have.

Jealousy, on the other hand, focuses on what we have which we want to keep for ourselves. While envy is a desire to possess what another has, jealousy is a refusal to share what one possesses.

Envy or malicious nature can make one feel the pain of deprivation even when one is not actually deprived of. This results in a vicious circle of envy and unhappiness, since your unhappiness causes you to further envy with those who are happy.

Envy focuses on what we not have and how we may have failed. Our energy gets wasted in making comparisons between oneself and others, comparisons that result in feelings of inferiority. This leads to us to envy others and their achievements, and builds barriers between you and them.
Envy can distort our perspectives in life and distract us from our routines and responsibilities.

Envy immobilizes us from doing things that are necessary and important. Our energy is instead channeled towards undermining those we envy".

We often feel envious or malicious because of our own conflicts with self-esteem or with self-limitations.
There is a lack of self-worth and often a feeling of inferiority.

Envy falsely assumes that self-worth can be attained through possessions or achievements. When these belong to someone else, the envious person feels a loss of self-worth and wishes that the other person would lose these things so that his own self-worth can be restored…

" Incidentally, a number of modern Vedic astrologers have started recognising the planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan which is offering Astrology courses recognise these three additional planets. The Notes prepared by them for the students of first year Jyotirvid Course offered by them is very interesting and worth perusing:

"a number of modern Vedic astrologers have started recognising the planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto."

An interesting question...As far as I could gather, position is brought out...

Some Vedic astrologers have given due respect to the three outer
planets in Vedic chart interpretation and analysis by incorporating
them.

Many astrologers in the west and in India as well do use the Indian system to include the planets beyond Saturn.

They generally are not used as house rulers, however…it is stated that

Pluto rules sidereal sign Scorpio,

Uranus rules sidereal sign Aquarius

and Neptune rules sidereal sign Pisces

...so the house where the
planet is situated is tied in some way to the house in which the
planet rules....

But the rules so far on how to take them into account have not
been stated…

It is also stated that modern planets discovered so far correspond to the elements known to the ancients—air (Uranus, god of the heavens), water (Neptune, god of the sea), and fire (Pluto, god of the underworld)…..The reason as to their exclusion from the purview of Vedic astrology is not clear..

The reason that many Vedic astrologers don't use Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto is that the astrology of India is very tradition bound and also multifold reasons…

Everyone still studies the ancient texts on Astrology notably the Bṛhat Parāśara Horāśāstra, and Sārāvalī by Kalyāṇavarman. which never mention Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto. So modern Indian astrologers don't feel they are needed. They feel
that the use of the newly discoverd planets corrupt the perfect ancient
system…..

Dasa and Bukhti does not come in for these three planets until..
further observations are made by the astrological community…..taking into consideration of their very slow movement..as indicated below..

Uranus takes 84 years to orbit the Sun, spending about 7 years in each sign of the zodiac. Uranus was discovered only in 1781 by Sir William Herschel.

Pluto takes 247 years to make a full circuit of the zodiac, but its progress is highly variable: it spends between 15 and 26 years in each sign.

Neptune takes 165 years to orbit the Sun, spending approximately 14 years (13.75) in each sign of the zodiac. Neptune was discovered in 1846.[

Consideration of Dasa/Bukthi as well as Kochara are necessary for any predictions which are still in infant stage....

Here is an interesting write up on Musical Compositions of Muthuswami Dikshitar on Planets

Prof. GOWRI KUPPUSWAMY & Dr. M. HARIHARAN....

http://yabaluri.org/TRIVENI/CDWEB/music ... sapr82.htm

As the authors say..."It can thus be seen Muthuswami Dikshitar has not only taken pains to choose appropriate Ragas for his compositions on each of the nine Grahas but also used all the Suladi Sapta Talas enumerated in the famous Tala aphorism for his Navagraha Kritis. The adoption of this Tala principle for this set of group Kritis bears testimony to his outstanding abilities in music and unparalleled gifts as a composer. A noteworthy feature or interesting coincidence is that the sum total of the Aksharas of all the Talas used in these Kritis is 81, which is a multiple of 9, the number of all the Grahas. "

I do not know whether you have come across this: I have not until now...

"There is a saying in South India that the music of Tyagaraja is like a grape - the moment you put it in your mouth it dissolves and is sweet, that of Shyama Shastry is like a banana. One has to peel the skin to eat it.

But the art of Dikshitar is like a coconut: if you want to taste the milk inside you will have to break the hard shell. "

Slokas on the three outside planets...

It is stated that modern planets discovered so far correspond to the elements known to the ancients—air (Uranus, god of the heavens), water (Neptune, god of the sea), and fire (Pluto, god of the underworld)…..

Water is identified with Neptune- the sea God... Water is varuna…

Two songs of Thyagaraja and Purandaradasa refer to planets and their effect ...

GrahaBalamEmi-Revagupti-Deshadi-Tyagaraja
One has to surrender all actions to Hari.
Viz. one’s duties and actions are to be performed with an attitude that the results are dedicated to HIM.

If one does performs so, is it necessary for him to get concerned about the effects of the movements of planets on him ?

This is what Thyagaraja says in GrahaBalamEmi-Revagupti-Deshadi-

What strength the planets have? Only the the grace of Lord Sri Rama has the real strength.
For those who meditate on the beautiful form of the Lord, the strength of the nine planets can prove to have no effect.
To this Tyagaraja as also to those eminent persons who always chant the names of Lord Hari , the afflictions caused by the planets can have no effect as the five great sins and the obstinate (six-fold) enemies - desire etc. (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, matsarya) will be removed by the chanting.

Priya Sisters… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQKVllgPl6Q

brings out the same that if one has the

Grace of The Lord, one need not fear for the effects of planetary movements.

Saint Purandara Dasar also brings out the above in his composition:
Sakala graha bala nine sarasijaksha |p|
nikhila rakshaka nine vishwavyapakane |a|

Meaning : O Lord with eyes resembling lotus, you are the one who has powers over all Grahas (planets), which alone protects the entire universe. (which means that it is meaningless to pray shani/rahu/ketu etc without praying shri Hari).

Ravi candra budha nine rahu ketuvu nine
kavi guru shaniyu mangalanu nine
divarathriyu nine nava vidhanavu nine
bhavarogahara nine beshajanu nine |1|

Meaning :

You are sun, moon, venus, or comets, saturn, or any other planet. You are day or night, you are the nine vidhanas (6 vedangas, mimamsa, nyaya, vyakarana), you are the physician who can cure 'bhava' disease (which makes us take birth in this world).

Pakshmasavu nine parva kalavu nine
nakshatra yoga tithi karana nine
akshayavagi draupatiya manakayda
pakshivahana nine rakshakanu nine |2|

Meaning :

You are the pakshamasa (the month which is suitable to give tarpana to our forfothers), you are the parva kala (eclipse), you are good times or inauspicious times, you, the one who protected draupadi by giving infinite saree, are the one who has garuda as your vehicle and protects everyone.

Rutu vatsaravu nine pruthivigadiyu nine
kratu homa yagna sadgatiyu nine
jitavagiyennodeya purandara vitalane
shrutige silukada apratima mahima nine |3|

Meaning :

You are rutu vatsara, ugadi (year begining), all kinds of homas, and yagnas, you are the one to be reached (moksha), O my Lord, purandara vitala, you are the one who is beyond even the vedas (the one who cannot be known just by vedas either).
Muthuswamy Dikshadar seems to have a different view as he had composed songs on Navagrahas.

How the planets go round the set path without deviating .Which is the force behind keeping them in their designated path ?
All the above Saints who had the glimpse of the Lord, seems to agree that if one follows the path set out by Gita and surrenders all actions to Hari and also performs their duty without wishing for their fruits, they need not be concerned about the effects of the movements of planets; as, the Lord is the controlling force behind the grahas….

Navagraham in SriVaishnavam...

Sri Vaishnavas never consider Nava grahas as moorthies to be worshiped. They surely respect them, and there is no doubt about that. But never worship them. They worship only Srimannarayana for all their requirements and that is all (Saranagathi/prapatti). Nava Grahas serve to Lord SrimanNarayana always. And they take the dust of the Srivaishnava devotees to their head. This can be read from the sloka of Lord Venkateswara’s Suprabhabhatam :

SuryEndhu Bhouma Budha Vaakpati Kaavya souri
SvarbhAnu kEtu dvishat parishat pradhAnaa:
tvadhAsa dAsa charamAvati dhAsa dhAsA:
SrI VenkatAchalapatE ! Tava SuprabhAtam

Meaning : The main deities of the Assembly of Gods ,the (nine planets)- Sun(surya) , Moon(indhu), Mars (bhOma/Angaraka), Mercury(Budha), Jupiter(vaakpati/Brhaspati), Venus(Sukra), Saturn(Sani), Rahu and Ketu – remain (happy) to be the servants of the last grade of servants of the servants of Thy (Lord’s) servant -(They remain most obedient to Thee.) Lord of Venkatachala! May it be an auspicious dawn to Thee!

Lord Vishnu manifests in this world through different grahas to bestow on living beings the results of their karmas or action.

Says brihat parasara hora sastra (chapter 2, 3rd verses)

अवताराण्यनेकानि ह्यजस्य परमात्मनः।

जीवानां कर्मफलदो ग्रहरूपी जनार्दनः॥

[Among 18 sages like surya, brahma, vasista, parasara, kashyapa etc, the creators of astrology, the sage parasara is only one whose voluminous work Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra is available today and recognised by all]

Each of these grahas are having one incarnation of Lord as their in-dweller. So if one worships that avathara, the particular graham santhi is done and planets associated with them is given in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 2, verses 5-7

Here are the details:

Surya – Rama Incarnation , so you can worship in any Rama temple for that santhi. NAMO BHAGAVATE RAMACHANDRAYA
chandra – Krishna is indweller, so you can offer your pujas to Krishna in any temple. NAMO BHAGAVATE VASUDEVAYA
Kuja – Nrusimha incarnation, you can offer your prayers there. NAMO BHAGAVATE NARASIMHAYA
budha – budha also signifies Vishnu, it is recommended to worship Lord Vishnu directly.(some quote as kalki and suggest Lord Venkateswara as Kalow Venkatanayakaha). NAMO BHAGAVATE VASUDEVAYA
Bruhaspathi – Sri Vamana incarnation, you can choose a Vamana’s temple. NAMO BHAGAVATE TRIVIKRAMAYA
Sukra – Parasurama incarnation is indweller. It is not recommended by the parampara to use the name/worship ‘Parashurama’ directly. So you can worship goddess Lakshmi and can chant NAMO BHAGAVATE HRISHIKESHAYA

Dear Vkailasam:
Let us keep in mind that some of these are "pseudo-science"!
That Tonoscope picture of "OM" appears 'doctored' due to the appearance of sharp edges!
There was a discussion about it a few years ago in Ananda Vikatan (?)...

"pseudo-science"!......

Well…pseudo science..That how people call anything of Indian…

Tonoscope…..invented by a Swiss…it is science…

His Wave Phenomena and The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations is science….

When the membrane is set into vibrations by singing rather loudly through a cardboard pipe when the sand produces complex symmetrical forms, known as Chladni patterns…..it is called science..

When the same principles are applied to establish relationship of OM and Sri Chakra, It becomes pseudo or fake…..

Swami Vivekananda:
“let me draw your attention to one thing which unfortunately we always forget: that is — "O man, have faith in yourself." “mark you this — the most marvelous historical fact — that all the nations of the world have to sit down patiently at the feet of India to learn the eternal truths embodied in her literature’

We know that the origin of both music and astrology is Vedas…..

But, music is recognized as a science due to its being….”an intuitive natural phenomenon operating within the parameters ……of Time, Pitch, Energy, and under the 3 distinct and interrelated organization structures of Rhythm, Harmony, and Melody”……….

More and more people take up music both for listening and performing and it reaches the masses due to its attributes mentioned above….

But it is not the case with Astrology…

Astrology is considered as a science of waves and vibration produced by planets on living beings…

“The energy of the Cosmos in relation to the individual is described in terms of either light, colour, sound, music or just vibes. All of these manifestations have a common thread…….. Using wave theory.”

Astrology chart is a reading of the cosmic energy at the time of birth of an individual, displaying the inter-relationship between cosmic influences at that time, providing a chart of the native relative to the cosmic energy…

The mathematical calculations involved are many- enough to deter people for looking up to astrology…as also various rules and combinations set forth by the great rishes in their works on Astrology to evolve an accurate assessment and prediction……

In this computer age, it is easier to prepare a chart…but prediction part of it may still require individual talent to read the rules, to understand it and to interpret it…

This is where Astrologers fail giving room for making a sweeping conclusion that Astrology is fake and is a pseudo-science…

May be interested to know as to how cosmos affect …and paramacharia’s view on papa and punniya…

Scientist’s rejection of astrology is based on their not trying to be with the basics of astrology…

It seems when the astronomer Edmond Halley asked Sir Isaac Newton (essentially the “patron science of physics”) how he could possibly believe in astrology, Sir Isaac seems to have replied “Because I have studied the matter, Sir. You have not.”

It seems to be the one of the factors…..

When Shakespeare made the comment of the “stars influencing our lives”, possibly he meant it be about the planets of our solar system ….

“A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space”… (Albert Einstein, 1954)

“All things are parts of one single system, which is called Nature; the individual life is good when it is in harmony with Nature.”
(Zeno)

Once a foreigner wanted to know from Paramachariar……regarding one particular faith (i.e.) same soul taking various births, papa, punya being carried forward to the next births etc.. Periava wanted to him to go around 10 maternity centres within Kancheepuram and collect the data of children born within the last 2 days - Child's gender, health condition, parents name, status, educational qualification, time of birth.

When the details were brought to him, periva said..
All these children should be living exactly identical to each other, but not so practically, some are ill, some are healthy, some are born to rich parents, some are born to poor parents. Remember all children born in the same day, same longitude, latitude, you can't blame their horoscope which is going to be almost identical…
So, they have neither earned papa or punya in this birth….All these children have taken their present birth according to their deeds (karma) and the resultant papa, punya which they have assimilated in their previous births. ..
( Detaied version of this episode is posed in another thread regarding Paramachariar.)

One of the most important significance of 5th house in a horoscope is that it provides a clue to the good deeds (or bad deeds) relating to previous births…
This papa or puniya gets a clue from the 5th house…of a horoscope….

This is one of the important houses of a musician….

10 Sep 2012 21:24
I am saying about the 5th house from lagna which is cast based on the time of birth..

5th house is called Purva puniya Stan...Its significances are ...

This house indicates the good deeds during earlier births,
Children, speculation, intellectual status and luck are gauged from this house. Pleasure, love affairs, lady love, legal or illegal amusements, kidnap, rape, etc. are also checked. Belly, heart, liver, spleen are the body parts covered by this house.

Punya or papa depends on the owner of the fifth house, his placement in the horoscope, the planets who occupies this house,
the aspects which this house gets from planets as also certain positions in the navamsa and the like...

Time permitting you are welcome to my blog at....

vedic astrology about which I am dealing is different from western one..

AMAZING INFORMATION...Do read this with patience....
Was Lord Ram really born? .....Yes.......... read on............That there is also planetary evidence is amazing.
The story of Shri Ram's life was first narrated by Maharishi Valmiki in the Ramayana, which was written after Shri Ram was crowned as the king of Ayodhya. Maharishi Valmiki was a great astronomer as he has made sequential astronomica
l references on important dates related to the life of Shri Ram indicating the location of planets vis-a-vis zodiac constellations and the other stars (nakshatras). Needless to add that similar position of planets and nakshatras is not repeated in thousands of years. By entering the precise details of the planetary configuration of the important events in the life of Shri Ram as given in the Valmiki Ramayan in the software named "Planetarium" corresponding exact dates of these events according to the English calendar can be known....

Mr Pushkar Bhatnagar of the Indian Revenue Service had acquired this software from the US.. It is used to predict the solar/lunar eclipses and distance and location of other planets from earth. He entered the relevant details about the planetary positions narrated by Maharishi Valmiki and obtained very interesting and convincing results, which almost determine the important dates starting from the birth of Shri Ram to the date of his coming back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile...

Planetary-Influences-on-Human-Affairs-By-BV-Raman(Bangalore Venkatraman..the famous Astrologer…

http://www.scribd.com/doc/4802627/Plane ... y-BV-Raman

“Astrology reveals correspondences between the afflictions of Mars in aman's horoscope and his bodily illness or an affliction of Saturn in the 12th house isaccompanied by deafness or ear troubles. Similarly eye diseases appear in a man simultaneouslywith afflictions in certain stars in his horoscope — Jyeshta or Antares.Sometimes doubters in astrology go further and ask how such correspondences
can betrue.
The sense that such correspondences or effects of distant planetary bodies on human livesare impossible and contrary, to nature, or accepted view of nature, and of the cosmos, rests onunconsciously accepted assumptions about their nature and about the relations between them. But this assumption is arbitrary. There is no reason why the real inwardness of the heavenly bodies — planets and stars — and their mutual relations and their impact on human life anddestiny should resemble the things and relations of ordinary experience — stocks and stones. The ancients must have discovered the effects of planets on man by two methods,
viz.,
intuitionand observation. The first according to the sages is definitely more trustworthy. Intuition, introspection or
divyadrishti
is an individual experience or perception or a faculty which theancient Maharshis had acquired due to their austere and moral lives and by the practice of yoga.Bertrand Russel considers that "introspection is valid as a source of data, and is to a considerableextent amenable to scientific controls". Intuition transcends intellect. According to Jung,"intuition is a kind of instinctive appreciation irrespective of the nature of its contents. Throughintuition any one content is presented as a complete whole. Intuitive cognition possesses anintrinsic nature of certainty and conviction which enabled Spinoza to uphold the
Scientia Intuitiva
as the highest form of cognition." Patanjali suggests in his famous
Yoga Sutras
that theYogi, after reaching a certain plane of spiritual attainment, can establish direct communion withthe different planetary bodies and perceive their mysteries without the aid of mechanicalcontrivances.Observation must have played its part equally well. The sages must have noted theindividual and collective events in the light of recurrence of certain planetary configurations, the psychological reactions of different types of people to certain planetary combinations. Hundredsof years of such observations must have convinced the sages that the birth in certain signs of thezodiac would confer certain definite psychological and physical traits. The planets, the signs andthe zodiac became merely a symbol rendering possible the application of the laws of periodicityto individual and national lives. The truth of astrology has also been established by statistical methods. As BertrandRussel says, "Statistics ideally are accurate laws about large groups; they differ from other lawsonly in being about groups, not about individuals." Statistically it can be shown that several

astrological combinations are corroborated. It will be seen that some of the greatest thinkers andintellectuals of all ages have endorsed the truth of astrology, and have consulted their horoscopes. The bard of Avon puts the following words into the mouth of King Lear: — "It is the stars, the stars above us govern our condition."Even more striking is his flair for astrologic humor. He makes a disgruntled player tocomplain:"It is impossible that anything should be as I would have it; for I was born, Sir, when theCrab was ascending; and all my affairs go backwards."Dante's astrology is written in majestic measure. We follow him into the vastness of space:"
... I saw The sign that follows Taurus, and was in it.Oh glorious stars ! Oh light impregnated With mighty virtues, from which I acknowledge All of my genius whatsoe'er it be,With you was born, and hid himself with you He who is father of all mortal life,When first I tasted of the Tuscan air; And then when grace was freely given to meTo enter the high wheel which turns you round Your region was allotted unto me.
"

"For Dante astrology was the noblest of the sciences," writes H. Flanders Dunbar. "For Dante," she continues, "the principle of individualization is the influence of planets and stars, or,more accurately, of the intelligences by which they are moved. The ego, created directly by God,in its connection with the body comes under stellar influence, and at birth is stamped like wax bya seal. All impressions from the stars are good, since there is no lovableness that does not reflectthe lovableness of God. It is the harmonizing and proportioning of these good qualities in their true relationships that make this or that person more or less perfect. It is likely that the modernreader, with his over-simple conception astrology, will lose much of the meaning of Dante......Astrology was both more complicated and more scientific in the method than the familiar birth-month pamphlets suggest."Goethe commits himself in no uncertain terms to both the theory and practice of astrology. He begins his autobiography thus: "On the 28th of August 1749, at midday, as theclock struck twelve, I came into the world, at Frankfort-on-the-Maine. The aspect of the starswas propitious; the Sun stood in the sign of the Virgin, and had culminated for the day; Jupiter
and Venus looked on with a friendly eye, and Mercury not adversely; the attitude of Saturn andMars was neutral; the Moon alone, just full, exerted all the more as her power of opposition had just reached her planetary hour. She, therefore, resisted my birth which could not beaccomplished until this hour was passed. These auspicious aspects which the astrologers subsequently interpreted very favorably for me may have been the causes of my preservation”…

Do planets influence man? At chapter 4 at page 28

Mr. Venkatakailasam,

I could go as far as chapter 4, "Planets and Man" in BV Raman's book before I decided to give up. The book on the whole is an exercise in circumlocution and is riddled with many ludicruous statements, such as :

Prof. Lakhovsky has shown that cosmic radiations pouring on theearth from outer space and coming from various stars and planets "act on the chromosomes of the cell nuclei which are cosmo-electrical resonators, absorb and take up these cosmic radiations, which are transformed into vital electricity and that mysterious force we call life. And in asimilar manner he thinks that brain cells through antennae-like projections absorb stellar and planetary radiations just as radio antennae absorb radio waves."

Without Sun's heat and light nothing could exist in the world even for a single second.

The solar and planetary rays — radio-like waves — affect biological and psychological processes.

After sometime, the author couldn't make up his mind on which force, electromagnetic or gravitational, is affecting man...

From a gravitational and tidal point of view, the forces of attraction existing between theearth and a few planets are as follows: — Moon... 20,185,000,000,000,000 tonsJupiter... 138,900,000,000,000 tonsVenus... 138,250,000,000,000 tons

While it is true that Jupiter might exert huge gravitational force on earth, we have to note that the 2 bodies are very massive. The gravitational force on an 8 pound baby or even a 100 kg man, from whatever planets, is very very tiny.

So, it looks like we can't explain astrology through modern scientific reasoning in 4 dimensional space-time. We may have to invent an "astral" plane, whatever that might be!

Perhaps it will be interesting, hopefully not controversial, to take a poll through this forum to see how many people believe astrology is actual science.

The intention is not to find out as to how many people believe in Astrology.....The thread was to know the commonality between Astrology and Music

and it has touched a larger spectrum .....

you could have done well if you can complete chapter 4 also...

I am Quoting....."When the astronomer Edmond Halley asked Sir Isaac Newton (essentially the “patron science of physics”) how he could possibly believe in astrology, Sir Isaac answered, “Because I have studied the matter, Sir. You have not.” And therein lies the crux of the matter.

Excellent presentation of the connection between music and astrology. In general, one can say, that everything in this Universe is interconnected and never independent . The write up is so exhaustive that just a cursory glance will be of noavail. I gave to re ad it again and again for atleast half a dozen tines to understand the full import. Right now, I am pre-occupied with my family matters, as my second daughter and family are arriving from Toronto, today after a period of 4 years. So, it ought the best option is to share this wonderful wealth of information and study it in detail, whenever I find time, in my own page, as otherwise, it will be list in the maze of other listings, both useful and trivial. My pranams to you, Sir and thanks.
